Overview

MBR combines conventional biological treatment (aeration) with membrane separation (submerged hollow-fiber or flat-sheet UF). The membrane replaces the secondary clarifier and produces very low-TSS permeate suitable for reuse — significantly reducing footprint and delivering higher quality effluent.

Process Flow (MBR) — Sequence

Toilets & Wastewater → Bar Screen → Oil & Grit Trap → Collection / Equalization Tank (disc diffusers) → Raw Sewage Transfer Pump → Aeration Tank + Submerged MBR Module (UF membranes + air scour) → Permeate Pump → Permeate / Polishing Tank → Optional PSF → ACF → Hypo/UV → Final Treated Water Tank (Reuse). Concentrate/MLSS → Sludge Holding → Dewatering.

MBR eliminates need for a large secondary clarifier. Membranes require periodic backwash & CIP; design includes membrane room, permeate pumps, and chemical dosing for CIP.

Membrane vendor selection and guaranteed flux determine exact membrane footprint & number. We size membrane modules after site visit, sample characteristics and jar test.

Blower, Air & Power Estimates

Oxygen & Air: MBR needs air for biological oxidation and additional air for membrane scouring. As a starting point (same BOD assumptions as ASP): design air ≈ 1,300 m³/day ≈ 65 m³/hr. For scouring, add margin; recommend total blower capacity 80–120 m³/hr split across 2 blowers (duty + standby).

Power: Expect installed motor power ~ 30 – 45 HP total (blowers, pumps, CIP skid, permeate pumps). Final selection after vendor specs.

Permeate from MBR is usually high quality — still include disinfection and optional polishing based on reuse application and regulatory requirements.

Operation & Maintenance (MBR Highlights)

  • Monitor TMP (transmembrane pressure) & flux; schedule backwash and chemical CIP based on vendor recommendations.
  • Air scouring is essential — ensure blowers & diffusers are maintained for effective scouring.
  • Permeate pumps & valves require periodic inspection; spare seals and membranes recommended on site.
  • Safe handling & storage of CIP chemicals (acid/alkali) with bunded area.
  • Keep maintenance log and membrane performance records for warranty and troubleshooting.
