What is an Iron Removal Plant?
An Iron Removal Plant removes dissolved iron (Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺) and manganese from groundwater or borewell sources. These plants protect plumbing, prevent staining in laundry and fixtures, improve taste and odour, and protect downstream membranes (RO/UF) from fouling. We design systems to match local water chemistry, flow and operational preferences.
Why Remove Iron & Manganese?
- Staining of clothes, fixtures and sanitary ware
- Bad taste and odour in potable water
- Clogging and fouling of pipelines and membranes
- Accelerated corrosion in systems
- Compliance for industrial & food applications
Treatment Process & Technologies
We choose the right process based on raw water parameters (Fe, Mn, pH, DO, TDS). Typical approaches:
BIRM (Manganese Dioxide Media)
Non-regenerable catalytic media for iron & manganese removal. Works well where DO is adequate; low chemical use.
MnO₂ Media / Greensand
Oxidation & filtration media; greensand often requires periodic regeneration (KMnO₄) for sustained performance.
Dual Media Filter (Sand + Greensand / GAC)
Graded media beds for turbidity and iron removal; GAC can be included for organics & odour control.
Air Injection + Filtration
Air oxidizes dissolved iron to ferric form which is filtered in media beds; good for small to medium flows.
Oxidation (Chlorine / Ozone) + Filtration
For high iron/manganese or low DO waters — chemical oxidation followed by filtration ensures removal.
RO / UF Pre-treatment
For systems feeding RO, we provide optimized iron removal ahead of membranes to protect them from fouling.
Generic Process Flow
Filter Media & Typical Sizes (Quick Reference)
| # | Media | Typical Size / Notes | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gravel / Support Bed | 2–20 mm (graded) | Support layered media, prevent washout |
| 2 | Quartz Sand | 0.5–2 mm | Primary filtration and turbidity removal |
| 3 | BIRM | Proprietary granular media | Catalytic removal of iron & manganese (no regen) |
| 4 | MnO₂ / Greensand | Supplier sizes — regenerate with KMnO₄ | Oxidation + filtration of Fe/Mn |
| 5 | Activated Carbon (GAC) | 4×8, 8×16 mesh | Organics, chlorine & odour removal |
| 6 | KDF / Catalytic Media | Granular | Heavy metal reduction & bacteriostatic action |
Note: Exact media grading (effective size, uniformity coefficient) & bed depth provided after water analysis. We perform jar tests and pilot runs when required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How often does Greensand need regeneration?A: Greensand typically requires periodic regeneration using potassium permanganate (frequency depends on load & concentrations).
Q: Can BIRM work without chemicals?A: Yes — BIRM works catalytically in presence of dissolved oxygen; chemical-free operation where DO is adequate.
Q: What is backwash frequency?A: Depends on inlet turbidity & iron loading; typical auto-backwash cycles are once per day to once per several days — PLC controls backwash logic.
