RRR ENVIRO SYSTEMS
Leather & Tannery Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
Specialized ETPs for tanneries — effective sulfide oxidation, chromium removal/recovery, color & COD reduction, sludge handling and ZLD options. Turnkey design, pilot-backed guarantees and PCB-ready technical documentation.
Note: Tannery effluents are complex — detailed sample analysis required. We perform jar tests & pilot trials before final design.
Quick Scope
- Sulfide oxidation & chrome precipitation
- Coagulation, DAF & biological treatment
- Polishing, UF/RO & ZLD options
About Tannery Wastewater
Tannery effluent typically contains high organic load (BOD/COD), sulfides, chromium (Cr³⁺/Cr⁶⁺), strong color, suspended solids, salt and sometimes high TDS. Untreated discharge causes severe environmental harm — odor, toxicity to aquatic life, soil & groundwater contamination. Treatment must handle sulfide safety, chromium stabilization/recovery and sludge with chrome content according to hazardous waste rules.
Recommended Process Flow
Typical process sequence for tannery ETP (site-specific variations apply):
Chrome-bearing sludge and spent chemicals need handling as per Hazardous & Other Wastes (Management & Transboundary Movement) Rules. We provide guidance for safe disposal and chrome recovery where feasible.
Technical Specifications — Typical 20 KLD Example
| Parameter | Value / Note |
|---|---|
| Design Flow | 20 KLD (scalable: 5–300 KLD) |
| Influent Characteristics | pH variable, BOD 1000–8000 mg/L, COD 2000–15000 mg/L, Sulfide 50–1000 mg/L, Chromium (if present) variable, TSS high |
| Primary | Sulfide oxidation, equalization, coagulation & DAF |
| Biological | MBBR / SBR / ASP for BOD/COD reduction |
| Chromium | Reduction & precipitation to Cr(III) and removal as hydroxide; options for recovery |
| Polishing | Sand filter, GAC, UF/RO (if reuse required) |
| Sludge | Thickening + Filter Press; hazardous sludge management for chrome-bearing solids |
| Automation | PLC with pH, DO, ORP, chlorine residual and level sensors (optional) |
Exact guarantees and dosing depend on sample analysis and pilot testing. Chrome & sulfide handling require careful sequencing to avoid toxic byproducts (e.g., hexavalent chromium formation).
Key Chemicals & Purpose (Indicative)
- Oxidants: Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Hypochlorite — to oxidize sulfides before biological treatment.
- Coagulants: Ferric Chloride, Alum, PAC — to remove color and suspended solids.
- Polymers: Cationic/anionic flocculants — for floc formation & sludge dewatering.
- pH Adjusters: Sulfuric Acid / Lime / Caustic Soda — for neutralization & chromium precipitation.
- Reducing agents: For chromium speciation control (site-specific)
- Activated Carbon: For organics & color polishing (optional)
All chemical doses are indicative. Jar tests and pilot trials required for final dosing and sequence.
ZLD & Chrome Recovery Options
For tanneries with high TDS or when zero discharge is required, options include:
- UF → RO for water recovery and concentrate generation
- RO concentrate → MEE / Crystallizer for salt recovery
- Selective chemical precipitation and filtration for chromium recovery
- Sludge treatment for safe disposal or metal recovery routes
ZLD and chrome recovery designs must consider economics, salt chemistry and regulatory limits. We perform pilot tests and energy estimates before committing to ZLD.
