Metal Finishing & Electroplating Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
Turnkey solutions for electroplating, metal finishing, galvanizing and surface treatment plants — cyanide detox, heavy metal precipitation, sludge handling and ZLD-ready systems. PCB-ready technical packs & pilot testing available.
Note: Electroplating effluents contain cyanides, heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd), complexing agents and high conductivity. Site-specific sampling & pilot trials are recommended before final design.
Quick Services
- Sample-based treatability study & jar tests
- Cyanide detox & heavy metal precipitation systems
- Ion-exchange & RO polishing for reuse
- PCB submission-ready documentation & replies
About Electroplating Wastewater
Electroplating and metal finishing effluents are high in dissolved heavy metals (chromium, nickel, copper, zinc), cyanide complexes, acidic/alkaline streams, chelates, surfactants and high conductivity. These pollutants are toxic and require careful sequence of chemical and physical steps for safe removal and compliance with TNPCB / CPCB standards.
Recommended Process Flow (Generic)
This is a typical sequence — actual flow is determined by sample analysis and pilot results.
Cyanide detox must be performed before metal precipitation to prevent formation of stable metal–cyanide complexes. Sequencing, dose control and safety are critical — we provide SOPs, monitoring and PLC interlocks for safe operation.
Common Chemicals & Purpose (Typical)
| Chemical | Purpose | Typical Dose / Note |
|---|---|---|
| Caustic Soda (NaOH) | pH correction, metal hydroxide precipitation | Site dependent |
| Lime (Ca(OH)₂) | Alkalinity & precipitation; sludge conditioning | Site dependent |
| Ferrous Sulphate / Sulphide salts | Sulfide precipitation for specific metals (e.g., Cu, Zn) | Controlled dosing |
| Sodium Meta-Bisulphite (SMBS) | Dechlorination / cyanide destruction aid | Used after oxidation steps |
| Hypochlorite / Hydrogen Peroxide | Cyanide oxidation / detox | Operate under strict control |
| Coagulants (FeCl₃ / Alum / PAC) | Coagulation & colour / TSS removal | Jar tested dosing |
| Polymers (Cationic / Anionic) | Flocculation & sludge dewatering aid | Low dosage (mg/L) |
| Activated Carbon (GAC) | Organic & chelate removal, odour | Polishing stage |
| Ion Exchange Resins | Polishing & metal recovery | Regeneration plan required |
Exact chemical choice & dose must be set after jar tests and pilot runs. Safety procedures and neutralization steps are provided in the O&M manual.
ZLD & Resource Recovery Options
- UF/RO polishing for water reuse; RO concentrate → MEE / ATFD → Crystallizer for salts recovery
- Ion-exchange for metal recovery (precious metals recovery possible in plating shops)
- Cyanide recovery/destroy & stabilised sludge treatment to reduce hazardous disposal costs
- Economics & pilot testing essential before ZLD commitment
We deliver techno-commercial ZLD proposals (energy estimate, CAPEX/OPEX, salt handling plan) after pilot trials and sample characterisation.
Example: Typical 20 KLD Electroplating ETP Scope
| Item | Typical Detail |
|---|---|
| Influent | Acid / alkaline rinses, plating bath spills, cyanide complexed streams, metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn) |
| Primary | Segregation, screening, cyanide detox (oxidation) |
| Precipitation | pH adjustment → metal hydroxide/sulfide precipitation (reactor + clarifier) |
| Polishing | Sand filter, activated carbon, ion-exchange (if required) |
| Sludge | Thickener + filter press; hazardous sludge handling per rules |
| Automation | PLC with dosing, interlocks & monitoring (pH, ORP, cyanide, metals) |
We provide performance guarantees based on pilot results and jar tests — not on assumptions.
Safety & Regulatory Notes
- Cyanide oxidation must follow strict SOPs — avoid metal-cyanide complex formation before detox.
- Chromium handling must avoid hexavalent chromium formation; reduction & precipitation sequence is critical.
- Hazardous sludge is handled per Hazardous Waste rules — documentation & manifesting provided.
- PCB submissions include detailed calculations, sampling reports and pilot data; RRR provides reply packs for technical queries.
We train operators on chemical handling, PPE, neutralization steps and emergency response planning.
